In the month of December, we have been learning and exploring through our pretend play Holiday Center. Students have enjoyed decorating our tree in our classroom, and pretending to make cookies with friends around the fire place! In math, we continued our counting unit and practiced counting with our story Ten Red Apples. In science, we talked about how we can help others in our community. We talked about donating, making cards, volunteering, give food, and a smile! We began comparing size with our math book, The Best Bug Parade. Students had fun exploring numbers, counting apples and animals in our books. We worked on comparing small and big. And comparing short and long. In ELA we read Give Giving a Try, and Kindness in the Community. We worked on retelling the story and identifying key details. We continued practicing letter identification as we worked on sounding out and building CVC words from the word families it, ig, eg.  In Letterland, we visited Eddy Elephant (e), Oscar Orange (o) & Peter Puppy (p). In writing, we traveled to different countries and talked about how they celebrate Holidays. We talked about the Netherlands, Mexico, Sweden, China, Germany, India & France. We have loved singing holiday songs in music, visiting Bogie, and our snowball fight during Mad Science! We enjoyed having everyone come to visit Santa, and decorate cookies with us!   Throughout April, we learned about maps by exploring our pretend play camping center. In science, we finished learning about items that can be pushed versus pulled. In social studies, we practiced using maps and identifying landforms. In literacy, we dove deeper into how maps help us by reading Let's Go Camping and Nadia Finds Her way. Students practiced finding illustrations that paired with the story, identifying key details, and the main idea of stories. Students continued practicing letter recognition, letter sounds, and learned new letter blends. In math, we wrapped up our units on addition and subtraction with Gus the Plus and Linus the Minus. As a class, we have been enjoying the beautiful warm weather outside and had so much fun planting and caring for our flowers this month!

Our first grade friends were hard at work in the month of March! In science, we learned about different earth materials. Students were able to practice identifying the earth materials (rocks, soil, water, clay, etc.) in our pretend play dinosaur dig site! In literacy, students practiced idenitfying details in text as we read Earth Changes and The Rain Garden Project. They worked to communicate if they understood or had questions about a text while using a communication board. Students practiced identifying letter sounds and blending words using digraphs and familiar word families. In writing, students used digital tools to build their name and communicated factual and experiential information in their writing. In math, we added and subtracted using various animals and objects. In specials, students had so much fun learning the game of baseball and visiting with their Frankie Friends.

September Recap

  Our 1st graders have been hard at work learning our classroom routines and rules this month! In social studies we talked a lot about rules, expectations, and reviewed emergency drills. In literacy, we have been learning our letters and sight words, as well as beginning to learn about word families. We have practiced attending to books read aloud in small groups; we read stories from our curriculum titled "My Cool School" and "Club Rules". In math, we worked on categorizing data - involving size, color, object and shape. In writing, we are working on stating our opinions and coloring pictures that relate to what we write about. We have had a blast exploring our classroom centers, including our pretend play lemonade stand. It has been so fun to learn everyones' personalities and watch them learn how to play and socialize together. We are excited for all of the fun to come throughout the rest of this school year together!
